Retraining High level mobility – Is walking enough?
What is functional mobility?
Many people are able to walk independently, but are still unable to return to work, sport or leisure activities. Higher level mobility skills such as stair climbing, running or even taking a fast step safely can improve quality of life and safety.
Who can benefit from this?
Anybody can benefit from this, but particularly after a traumatic neurological injury such as a brain injury or a stroke, you may have further rehabilitation potential once you are home in the community. People with progressive neurological diseases – such as Parkinsons or Multiple Sclerosis, can also benefit from exploring higher level mobility, and it may form part of your goals in engaging in employment or recreational activities.
Why do we offer this service?
Higher level mobility offers many benefits; being able to cross the street safely, faster transportation, being able to play with and care for children, avoiding dangerous situations, engaging in sports and recreation. Many people do not realise that they have potential to develop a higher level of functional mobility with the right assessment and training.
How can we help?
Our Physiotherapists thrive at helping you pursue your goals. We are able to perform a clinical assessment of your functional mobility using observation, video gait analysis, and standardised outcome measures. We can identify causes for reduced high-level functional mobility, such as weakness, stiffness, pain, reduced power, reduced trunk stability, sensory or co-ordination deficits etc. We can assist you in minimising these barriers through interventions including strength training, speed and ballistic training, power generation, balance training, trunk and postural stability, pre-running drills and running programs.
Appointments can be made in the clinic or at home in the community
