Lumbosacral Radiculopathy is a condition that can cause symptoms including lower back pain that radiates into the lower limbs and muscle weakness, sensory changes and loss of reflexes in the lower limbs. Sciatica is an older term to describe lower limb nerve pain only and the name originates from a nerve the ‘sciatic nerve’ that travels down your leg.

The lower back spinal region is referred to as the lumbosacral spine and the spinal nerves exit the vertebrae and travel from the lower back down the legs to supply innervation for movement, sensation and reflexes. These spinal nerves become compressed and/or irritated in Lumbosacral Radiculopathy.

SOME Causes of spinal nerve irritation and/or compression:

  • Spinal disc herniation - when the centre of the disc pushes through the tougher exterior part

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing)

  • Spondylolisthesis (slippage of one vertebrae on another)

  • Cysts, tumours

  • Infections

The good news! Disc herniations CAN regress or disappear without surgical intervention!

Underlying factors that may worsen the effects:

  • Poor general health (obesity and smoking)

  • Occupational factors (labour)

  • Physical/ psychological stress
