Exploring New Possibilities: Could the Paragolfer® Help Our Clients Access More of the Outdoors?
At Physio Express, we are constantly exploring innovative ways to help our clients achieve their functional goals, maximise independence, and participate in the activities that matter most to them.
Advances in assistive technology continue to create exciting opportunities for people living with neurological conditions and disabilities. As clinicians, we regularly review emerging equipment and mobility solutions to determine whether they may help our clients overcome barriers and access experiences that were previously out of reach.
One piece of equipment that has recently caught our attention is the Paragolfer®.
What is the Paragolfer®?
Originally developed to enable people with mobility impairments to access golf courses, the Paragolfer® is a specialised all-terrain mobility device designed to navigate challenging outdoor environments while also supporting users in a standing position.
Unlike traditional power wheelchairs, which are primarily designed for indoor use and smooth outdoor surfaces, the Paragolfer® has been engineered specifically for uneven terrain, soft ground, slopes, and outdoor recreation.
Why Are We Interested in It?
Many of our clients tell us that one of their biggest frustrations is being unable to access outdoor environments such as:
Beaches
Parks and nature reserves
Bushwalking trails
Sporting venues
Golf courses
Community events held on uneven terrain
While conventional power wheelchairs provide excellent mobility in many situations, they often face limitations when conditions become more challenging.
The Paragolfer® appears to offer some unique advantages in these environments.
How Does It Compare to a Standard Power Wheelchair?
Soft Sand and Loose Surfaces
Soft sand can be extremely difficult for traditional power wheelchairs. Drive wheels may sink, castors can become bogged, and traction is often lost.
The Paragolfer® uses wide, low-pressure tyres and high-torque drive systems designed to reduce sinking and maintain movement over loose surfaces such as sand and bunkers.
Uneven and Rough Ground
Traversing rough terrain can be challenging in a standard powerchair, particularly when castors become caught or when the chair "high centres," leaving drive wheels unable to maintain traction.
The Paragolfer® incorporates independent suspension and a low centre of gravity, helping maintain stability and ground contact across uneven terrain.
Slopes and Cambers
Outdoor environments often involve hills, gradients, and uneven side slopes.
The Paragolfer® has been specifically designed for outdoor gradients and provides standing support while travelling. In comparison, many traditional powerchairs are less stable on steeper slopes and may carry a greater risk of tipping, particularly when travelling uphill.
Wet Grass and Outdoor Conditions
Wet grass can significantly reduce traction for conventional powerchairs, with castors sometimes skidding or digging into the surface.
The Paragolfer's® all-terrain tread pattern and controlled torque system are designed to improve grip and performance in these conditions.
What Could This Mean for Our Clients?
For many people, mobility is about far more than getting from one place to another. It is about participation, recreation, social connection, and quality of life.
Equipment such as the Paragolfer® has the potential to create opportunities for individuals who may currently be limited in their ability to access outdoor environments. Whether that means returning to golf, exploring the beach with family, attending outdoor community events, or simply spending more time enjoying nature, the possibilities are exciting.
The standing function may also provide additional benefits, including improved social interaction, greater access to activities performed at standing height, and the opportunity to experience environments from a different perspective.
Our Commitment to Innovation
At Physio Express, we believe that rehabilitation is about more than improving physical function—it is about helping people live the life they want to live.
That is why we continually investigate emerging technologies, equipment solutions, and evidence-informed innovations that may enhance independence, participation, and quality of life for our clients.
The Paragolfer® is just one example of the many innovative mobility solutions we are currently reviewing. As new technologies become available, we remain committed to exploring how they can support people living with neurological conditions and disabilities to reach their full potential and achieve goals that are meaningful to them.
If you would like to learn more about assistive technology options, mobility solutions, or how the Physio Express team can help you achieve your goals, we would love to hear from you. 💚
